For those who aren't familiar with this hidden gem of an album, you surely are missing out. Barsha's skillful use of metaphors and his amazing rhyming ability make this album flow smoother than silk. Barsha said himself: "I'm steady like Steven, my rhymes are live and breathing." The King of Chill, his DJ, has "incredible DJ skill on the wheels", as "Bar" puts it. Former and latter, Bar is spot-on.Tempo and rhyme-wise, this album is a textbook (albeit overlooked) symbol of rap from 1990: fast-paced, and catchy. The metronome was working overtime in Barsha's studio, because this album comes at you in a blaze! Lyrically, there are no surprises, either. "Barsha's Explicit Lyrics" contains exactly that, although by today's standards, he might not have even gotten the "sticker". Many songs tell intricate stories that do well to retain the listener's interest. His storytelling capability is masterful, and very intriguing, reminiscent of Slick Rick. Though the album is a bit top-heavy (tracks 1-6 tend to stand out versus the rest of the record), it's still a masterpiece to behold.

In the annals of "from the vaults" Hip Hop legend, time will show that a 17-year delay in the release of the Ultimate Force's ridiculously dope debut, "I m Not Playin", is an injustice of mammoth musical proportions. That sounds like a bunch of hype. It's not. Take one listen to "Another Hit", "Girls", "Revolution of the Mind", the stellar posse cut "Oh Shit" (featuring a teenaged Fat Joe, also heard here on "C'mon") and one of the best DJ tracks of all time, "Supreme Diamond D", and tell me that these wouldn't have blown up if they had hit, as originally planned, in 1990. We all know that the Ultimate Force's DJ and producer Diamond [then known as Diamond D] is one hell of a tracktitioner. His work on Lord Finesse's 1990 classic "Funky Technician" proved it, his 1992 debut "Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop" cemented it early on, and his track record ever since (ever heard of the Fugees? Busta Rhymes? DITC, anyone?) has shut down any doubters. Case closed. But one listen to this record will show you where his skills really started to shine. And not just as a producer, and definitely not as an MC (he didn't rhyme in the Ultimate Force). His DJ skills here, along with his now-legendary production muscle, are worth the price of admission alone. Imagine if the world had heard "Supreme Diamond D" wherein the man born Joseph Kirkland runs through the entire alphabet, cutting phrases from A to Z in 1990. Harlem's confrontational 2 Black 2 Strong came with the backing of MMG, a collective that included members Mean Gene, Johnny Marrs, Warchild, C Dogg, and Dark Chocolate. Doin' Hard Time on Planet Earth, 2 Black 2 Strong's 1991 album, was prefaced the previous year with the Burn Baby Burn EP. The cover of the EP depicted a burning U.S. flag and tipped off the subject matter of the title track. When Relativity's In-Effect offshoot attempted to press promotional copies, its tape manufacturer refused to comply. Eventually, it was pressed up through another source. 2 Black 2 Strong's continued testing of freedom of speech was met with resistance, especially since "Burn Baby Burn" included the line, "Fuck the red, white and blue." His solid album also tackled issues like the war on drugs, police brutality, and other inner-city plights. This release comes from a transition period in hip hop. Hip hop was moving from political, black power oriented lyrics to more street-level gansterism, and this albusm strikes a pleasant balance between the two.
