With his second album, Vendetta, Mic Geronimo proves that his hard-hitting debut was no fluke. Geronimo may flirt a little too heavily with the crossover, Puff Daddy's production on "Nothin' Move But the Money" is a little too smooth, and the blatant materialism doesn't suit him well, but the fact of the matter is, even when he tries his hand at the pop game, Geronimo has more lyrical skills than many of his peers. Musically, he needs to toughen up a little and find his own sensibility, but there's no denying that his rhyming is strong and that the R&B-flavored productions are appealing, and that all makes the album a Vendetta worth pursuing.

New York Reality Check 101 mixed by DJ Premier is a solid example of '90s underground hip-hop of New York; if DJ Premier is behind something it must be good. The album is a compilation of 14 singles that DJ Premier adeptly cuts back and fourth accompanied with an ongoing narration by Primo himself. Songs to check for include but are not limited to ED O.G.'s "Off Balance," Company Flow's "8 Steps to Perfection," and the resonating piano-laced Shades of Brooklyn's "Change." DJ Premier is associated with another project that proliferates quality hip-hop; just consider it a bonus that he helps expose good music otherwise not readily available in mainstream markets.

The first solo album released under Kool Keith's own name, Sex Style expands the dirtier parts of Dr. Octagonecologyst into a near-concept album. Sometimes a pimp, sometimes a pervert, Keith dubs his new approach "pornocore," cribbing dialogue from sex flicks to support astoundingly explicit raps that go places 2 Live Crew never had the capacity to imagine. Not only that, but when Keith turns his attention to inferior MCs, his disses are usually couched in elaborate sexual metaphors (a striking number of which involve water sports). Some songs do deviate from the theme, or at least tone it down a little, and while a few serve as a welcome respite, others simply don't have as much personality. The over the top raunch is Keith's main focus, and that's where the vast majority of the album's most imaginative rhymes come from. That makes Sex Style a polarizing entry in Keith's catalog. Musically, it's one of his most consistent solo outings, especially if you're just looking at the ones under his own name. It definitely benefits from production by KutMasta Kurt, who may not be as wildly inventive as Dan the Automator, but knows how to frame Keith's idiosyncratic flow with deep, funky beats. Thus, the album is borderline necessary for Keith fans; it really depends on your tolerance for the extremity of songs like "Sex Style," "Don't Crush It," "Make Up Your Mind," "Regular Girl," "Little Girls," or "Lovely Lady." But it is a chance to hear one of the freakiest rappers of all time at his freakiest. It's a sick album !! 4.5 / 5 Stars

Busta Rhymes certainly found a legitimate member for his Flipmode Squad in cousin Rampage, as he shows on his 1997 album release. Music from Lord Have Mercy, Rampage, Spliff Star, and of course Busta himself set them up to be a major player among the top crews in hip-hop, such as the Wu-Tang Clan, Boot Camp Clik, and D.I.T.C. On this album, a young Rampage is presented with some of the best production work done so far by Flipmode, and his flow works well with the beats. Lyrically, he has a simplified style of rapping without much wordplay, standing out more on the tracks where he's telling a story. The hypnotic piano on "Wild for the Night" easily makes for the best track on the album, but "Conquer Da World" and "Get the Money and Dip" are definite bangers.
